Tips For Purchasing Boom Trucks

By Amie Hoffman

Buying any used vehicle comes with many challenges. As opposed to a new vehicle, you have to consider so many things or lest you end up with equipment that will stall after a month. Finances might be the main reason for going for a secondhand truck so that you can increase the size of your fleet. Hence, you do not want to spend more money necessarily when buying used boom trucks for sale.

The most important decision to make is where you wish to make the purchase. There are many individual sellers around, but there are dealers as well. Many buyers prefer dealers because they are companies looking to keep their reputation and you can easily file a complaint in case of a problem. In addition, to the above, you might also find the below tips useful.

Understand your needs. Boom trucks are designed for various uses, and thus, they come in various sizes and shapes. Some vehicles are made to perform a variety of functions while some have a very specific use. Hence, you need to know whether you need a digger derrick, an aerial lift truck, a bucket truck, or a cherry picker.

It is recommended that any truck is used for its intended purpose. This will ensure that it lives to its set lifetime and you also save on maintenance cost. Hence, before you buy a truck ensure that it is of the right boom length, size, and weight. If you want one with a bucket or platform, then ensure that it comes with one.

Inspect the hydraulics. Heavy machines use hydraulic systems to run. Hence, when this part is damaged, the truck would not be useful. Moreover, these might be very costly repairs and it would not make economic sense to buy one and repair it on your own. Hence, you should test the machine for pressure and leaks.

Ask for past maintenance records. The vehicle might be functioning properly because it has been repaired for sale. However, it might have a poor maintenance history which makes it likely to break down once purchased. To be safe, ensure that it has been maintained professionally and regularly.

Check if the vehicle meets safety requirements. Heavy industrial vehicles should comply with OSHA standards so read the safety manuals and confirm that the truck has all the requirements. While some issues might be minor and you could easily handle later, pay attention to the major ones such as multiple crane controls, safety harnesses, vehicle outriggers, safety control mechanisms, and non-conductive casing.

Target auctions. If you are looking for great prices, then auctions are a great place to start. However, do your homework properly. Make sure that you visit the yard in advance and inspect the vehicle you wish to buy.

Before you finalize the purchase, get the assistance of a third-party mechanic. Have the individual inspect the vehicle. A professional may easily detect problems that you might have overlooked. Check the engine and ask about the mileage.
