Why Are People So Interested In Moldavite?

By Christine Bailey

Most people have seen meteor showers at one time or another. Occasionally meteors and comets come close to earth, but scientists insist they are light years away. A foreign object crashing into the earth is not unusual however. There have been instances of direct hits with huge impact and devastating consequences. One such event transformed the atmosphere so drastically that it led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Another occurrence in the area of the Czech Republic resulted in the appearance of moldavite.

Some people assume tektite is a meteor particle, but it is not. When this asteroid crashed into what is now the Czech Republic, the resulting liquid spewed up from the earth and settled into solids when it returned and cooled. Over the millenniums, it embedded itself in soil and sand to form natural glass also known as tektite. The pieces have various degrees of complexity on their surfaces. The wetter their environment, the more deeply etched they are.

This substance has a connection to the Holy Grail for some. While many believe the Grail is a cup, others argue that is was actually a green stone that fell from the sky. This tektite is green, and it fell from the sky. Mystical stones falling from the sky are a common theme in stories told throughout the world. The Grail is also believed to have healing powers and powers of rejuvenation.

Some who hold the substance believe it has special powers. They really believe the tingling sensations and warmth they feel are a direct result of contact with the glass. Facial redness and chest sensations are reported from others who hold these objects. The flushing is so common it has its own name among believers. Feeling lightheaded and dizzy is something a few people experience.

People who wear the glass sometimes do so because they believe in the healing powers it reportedly has. It is supposed to have the strength to heal mental, spiritual, and physical deficiencies. During healing sessions, some hold a piece of tektite to increase their sense of well being.

As an investment, the larger the piece of this tektite you own, the more valuable it is. Reportedly it has been so mined that pieces weighing over twenty grams are becoming harder and harder to find. As with many things that are rare, its value will probably increase over the years.

Besednice is the most sought after form of this glass, and is found in only one location. Some of it is extremely delicate and deeply etched. It's believed the pieces are so intricate in form because they existed in the pits at the water table. The pits are now closed.

There is more fake tektite than authentic. Most shops and online sites offer buyers replicas passed off as real. Whether you have the real thing or not, it is fun to think a piece of meteoric history is hanging around your neck.
