Exploring Feminist Workshops, Camps And Related Events

By Donna Kennedy

When it comes to conferences, college, conventions and festivals, there are often a number of activities. In some cases, this includes feminist workshops. For example, there are a number of colleges and universities which host Feminist Theory Workshops on an annual basis.

In some cases, conferences, conventions, festivals and rallies also highlight issues related to women. One of the most common those doing so are LGBTQ+ pride parade rallies. Whereas, recent marches and rallies for equal rights always host a number of feminist speakers and workshops.

Companies and individuals whom provide workshops in this area are often doing so for a profit. While this is the case, there are two which are owned and operated by women. These are Soapbox and Ambivalently Yours. As with others, these companies often make a profit, though in these particular cases, the workshops often take on a feminist tone.

Beyond workshops, there are also other events such as weekend camps which allow women an opportunity learn about feminist issues. In addition, as these events are often more relaxed, women also tend to learn more about oneself and other women while in attendance. As with most events of this nature, there are often a number of different learning opportunities.

It should be noted that camps are very different from other events. For, individuals can often converse about a number of different ideologies and interests. As this is the case, there are women of all backgrounds, lifestyles, political persuasions and sexual orientations. As such, it is important that those attending these events maintain an open mind.

In addition to learning about the history and work of others, the camp also provides the opportunity for all in attendance to examine and get to know oneself better. In the process, many have not only gained insight into the personal and political view one holds but have also discovered new talents and interests. As these events are open to all women, regardless of lifestyle, political party, race, religion, sexual orientation or political persuasion, it is important those planning to attend have an open mind, for while political discussions often become heated, emotional abuse and violence are never appropriate, and will not be tolerated, regardless of differences in these areas.

In most cases, those attending camps will hear talks by a popular, well known and respected woman offering a keynote address. While this is also the case at a number of conferences, conventions, festivals and rallies, those at camps are often more laid back. As such, individuals often share stories with one another afterward over a campfire or take walks and talk about issues under a starry sky.

Women sharing the same type of interests often make fast friends at these events. In many cases, these individuals will at some point work together to overcome challenges and obstacles important to women. When this is the case, there is a very good chance the friendships made at these events might very well last a lifetime.
